Patient Background

Willie Mangum Case

Imagine you are working as a volunteer at a HELPLINE in Santa Monica, California on a Tuesday morning in October. At 9:00 a.m. you get a phone call from a social worker working with the Santa Monica Police Department. She wants to bring a male individual (Willie Mangum, age 62) over on her way home for you to evaluate for possible services. Given her shift had ended she brought him to get your help in deciding if therapy was needed (if so what kind) or whether he should be remanded to the police department for prosecution.

Five tabs in the left sidebar include specific information about Willie and/or questions that will help you uncover information as you interview him. This program allows you to navigate freely among the categories, questions, and information, as you wish.

Contact Log

Tuesday, 9:30 AM
Willie Mangum was referred to the HELPLINE today by a social worker working with the Santa Monica Police Department. She thought his case presented interesting features that suggested he be seen by a mental health professional rather than brought before a magistrate and charged with illegal trespass, (e.g. sleeping on the beach as prohibited by municipal statutes). From her brief contact with Willie she also thought he presented with complex features that warranted further evaluation.
